Desmond Elliot, a prominent Nigerian actor and politician, has dismissed claims that he is gay, describing them as a publicity stunt.
The rumours emerged after a blog post named several Nigerian celebrities as being gay.
The list, which included high-profile figures from the country, sparked a strong backlash from netizens.
In an interview with TVC, which went viral on Friday, Elliot addressed the claims, noting that he would not dignify unfounded accusations with a response.
He said, “Why would I respond to allegations made against me when it does not affect my life either way?
“Secondly, it is an opinion that has been conceived, and I do not think I must confirm whether it is true or not; as long as I’m affecting people positively, I’m good.”
Elliot stressed that individuals’ personal choices are their own, as long as they remain within the law.
“If you feel you identify as something, as long as it is within the law, that is your choice. People do not have to accept it, but do what you wish.”
“So let me say right here, I am straight. You could not find anyone straighter than me.”
“If some people want to enjoy themselves through publicity, that is up to them, but I do not care. Do what you wish and enjoy yourself, but do it within the law and with consideration for your neighbours.”
