Grammy-award winner, Burna Boy has on Wednesday, March 31 been nominated for 2021 BRIT awards.
It would be recalled that the 29-year-old became the first Nigerian-based singer to win an individual Grammy for best album in the ‘World Music category’. Organizers of 2021 BRIT Awards, which is sometimes referred to as the British version of the Grammys, unveiled the nominees on Wednesday.
The awards, which usually held in February but was was delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic, will take place on May 11, 2021 and it will be hosted by comedian Jack Whitehall.
Burna Boy was nominated for ‘International Male Solo Artist’ category alongside The Weekend, Bruce Springsteen, Childish Gambino and Tame Impala. He was nominated for the same category last year for ‘African Giant’ his 2019 album but lost to Tyler The Creator, American singer-songwriter.
Meanwhile, after last year’s male-dominated Brit awards entrenched the clear gender disparity in British pop, this year’s nominations go some way to redressing the balance.
Dua Lipa, Arlo Parks, Celeste, Joel Corry and Young T & Bugsey lead this year’s awards with three nominations apiece. The British album category also features four out of five female nominees for the first time in Brits history, with the aforementioned women joined by Jessie Ware and J Hus – a marked improvement on 2020, when the category featured no women.
